Ali Bamford, saxophone teacher Newton Abbot: finding your voice

When you listen to any of the great saxophone players you'll be able to recognise them from the way and style they play a piece.

By listening to as much music as you can, you will find you'll start to pick out which musicians you like and even down to specific rifs that they play.

If it's jazz you're keen on then go to YouTube and search out the greats.  Listen to different performances by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Benny Carter, Dexter Gordon, Chet Baker, Herbie Hancock to more modern players such as Michael Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi and David Sanborn.

You'll start to get a feel for who and what you like.  All this helps feed you with ideas and styles and will gradually add to the melting pot of techniques and pieces that you play to help you find your own voice and style.

If it's more contemporary music, then again YouTube any of the bands you like, from local bands like Land of the Giants from Plymouth to much bigger bands.  Listen to the horn sections or saxophone lines.  You'll also start to notice saxophone solos and lines in music you hear on the radio.  Anything you hear that you like, then Google, YouTube, Spotify all these bands.

See if you can pick out bits of rifs that you like and work out how to play them.  Again all this helps you create your own unique style and find your own sound.
